A supply pattern of nurses in Korea was analyzed using the data of National Examination of Nurses´ License from 1962--1976 and a demand pattern of nurses was estimated based on the actual number of post (T. 0.) in the medical institutions where the nurses can be employed. Employment pattern of graduates from the nine colleges program of nursing and twenty-one junior college of nursing - program were surveyed. The obtained results of the study are summarized as follows:
1. The total number of candidates for the Nurses´ License through passing the examination at the N.-I.H. were 23,212 by Jan. 1976.
The actual number of licensed by the MOHSA was 23,632.
2. Until 1969, the number passed at the examination were less than 1, 000 in every year but the number were getting increased into 1, 505 in 1970, 2,591 in 1972, 3, 070 in 1975.
3. The over sea employment of nurses from the nine college programs during 1969-1973 were 44.8% in average while the 21 junior college programs were 38.2%. The mean of those two programs was 41.1%.
4. The over sea employment rates were getting decreased from 51.0% in 1969 to 32.0 in 1973 in college program and from 51.8 % in 1969 to 26.7 % in 1973 in junior college programs.
5. The loss of nurses by death was estimated 0.6% of the total licensed.
6. Inactive nurses because of marriage were estimated as 23.3%(5,385) of the total licensed.
7. Unemployed nurses who want jobs but not able to find one were estimated as 13.5%. (3, 190) of the total licensed.
8. The number of post which can be considered as a potential demand was counted as, much as 12,089.
9. The number of nurses who are working at present in Korea was estimated as 8,200. 10. The utilization rate of nurses within the country was calculated as 48.2%´-- of_ the total licensed.
